With the over-abundance of online media today, one would think that print media is all but extinct. Now, I am no expert on the subject, nor will I attempt to predict the future of digital or print media. What I will do is list the top five reasons why I can't let go of one form of print media, the magazine. After all, I'm simply a consumer, not a media visionary.
Specifically, a magazine popular among business and entrepreneurial minded folks: Fast Company. I would guess that more than 90% of the content I regularly consume is digital. And most of that is through syndication; be it RSS or e-mail. Yet, for some reason I still can't stop reading this magazine. Here are some of the reasons why:
- It's Fresh and Original: Obviously, magazines know as well as anyone that producing fresh content is harder than ever. Both the volume of online media and the connectivity of consumers has squashed the time it takes to get new information from source to destination. Yet, I still find the articles in Fast Company both original and interesting. Perhaps one of the reasons is the amount of research put into them. Perhaps another is that the authors stay in touch with the other forms of media and thus what their readers have already been exposed to.
- It's better than the competition: Look, I realize this point is quite subjective. However, it is quite clear that these reasons come simply from my opinion and not any type of technical research. Yeah, I've been a reader of some of the other business magazines out there and quite frankly I've gotten board with them. To mention one... I stopped reading Business 2.0 about a year ago. Every time I would get a new issue I would look at the cover and get a little interested. Then, I would open it up to find that the content felt stale, mundane, and a bit repetitive. Succinctly put, I am no longer a subscriber.
- No printer required: Okay, you can call me old fashioned, but sometimes I like to have a hard copy of an article. If for no other reason than to hang it on my wall and talk about it with others.
- It doesn't take batteries: Reading online media requires at minimum a battery and probably internet connectivity. Reading a magazine requires eyes and probably some fingers to turn the pages. Batteries. Well, let's just say I am of the opinion that they have not reached their potential in the user-friendliness category.
- I love getting snail mail: Again, call me old fashioned, but I am often quite delighted when I get my issue of Fast Company every month. Maybe it is because I spend most of my waking hours looking at a computer screen. My eyes much prefer the print media and my fingers much prefer the feel of paper.
By the way - If you want a free subscription to Fast Company, find a friend who subscribes. They have a deal right now where if you renew your subscription you get a free subscription for someone else.
